Presentation of the XV Congress SEFIN

The XV Congress of the Spanish Society of Nitrogen Fixation, and the IV PORTUGUESE-SPANISH Congress on Nitrogen Fixation.

This edition will be held in the historical city of León situated in the north-west of Spain from June 16th to 18th , 2015.

The Congress is open to all Researchers from public entities and private companies interested in the technological applications of the interactions between plants and microorganisms.

The main focus of the Congress will be agriculture and environmental applications. We would like to give a special welcome to our colleagues from other Nitrogen Fixation Nets, all over the world, in Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin America, Africa, and the USA.

The Latin American Association of Rhizobiology (Asociación Latino Americana de Rizobiología ALAR) shared with us the XIV SEFIN in the international Congress II IBEMPA in 2013, and the next III IBEMPA CONGRESS will be celebrated in 2017, so the XV SEFIN in 2015 is an exceptional occasion to meet again in between the two transatlantic Congresses.

This Congress is the only Iberian meeting for biotechnologists specialised on research about the sustainable exploitation of interactions between the microorganisms and the plants, and one of the most important for agrarian biotechnologists in general.

In the XV SEFIN the most edge-cutting advances will be presented, within the following sections:

SESSION 1

Ecology, diversity, and evolution of Plant Probiotic Microorganisms (PPM)

SESSION 2

Genetics, genomics and proteomics of PPM and their associated plants

SESSION 3

Plant-microorganisms interactions

SESSION 4

Inoculants for agriculture and environmental science

SESSION 5

Physiology and biochemistry of beneficial microorganisms and associated plants

DR.YAKOV OKON

Professor Emeritus in Agricultural Microbiology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Professor Okon has worked on biological nitrogen fixation and plant growth promoting effects in associations of rhizophere bacteria-Azospirillum brasilense and roots of grasses, and on coinoculation of legumes with rhizobia and azospirilla. Physiological properties of Azospirillum related to survival in the inoculants (bacteria in suitable carrier), such as production of storage materials polyhydroxybutyrate, polysaccharides and glycogen were investigated. Azospirillum inoculated legumes produce significantly higher levels of flavonoids, thus inducing nodulation factors production by rhizobia and resulting in earlier and higher nodule formation. An important achievement is that there are millions of hectares of maize and other plants of economic interest, inoculated with commercial inoculants of Azospirillum.

Euan James photo

DR. EUAN JAMES

Euan James obtained his PhD from the University of Dundee in 1990 on the subject of oxygen diffusion in legume nodules. Since then he has worked extensively in the tropics, particularly in South America and the Philippines, where he focused on confirming the presence of beneficial diazotrophic endophytic bacteria in sugarcane and rice. He also continued to work on the ultrastructure of rhizobial symbioses with both crop and non-crop (tree) legumes, especially in flooded tropical ecosystems. His recent work has been mainly on the emerging subject of nodulation of legumes by Betaproteobacteria; this has involved extensive fieldwork in Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico, and involves many other countries (India, China, South Africa). Dr James is currently at the James Hutton Instuitute, Dundee, UK, where he continues to conduct research into the ultrastructure and physiology of legume nodules, but is also quantifying the nitrogen contribution of legume crops to Scottish agriculture, with the long term aim of using them to help reduce expensive and environmentally damaging N-fertilizer applications. He has published c. 110 papers/chapters in peer-reviewed journals and books.
